Latin American & Iberian Network for Academic Collaboration (LAINAC)

What is UTokyo LAINAC?

The UTokyo Latin American & Iberian Network for Academic Collaboration (LAINAC) was founded in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo (UTokyo), in 2014. Its objective is to tighten the academic and educational relationships between the UTokyo and prestigious universities in Latin America and Spain.

With the launching of “The Top Global University Project” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology of Japan, the UTokyo started a plan to establish “strategic partnerships” with prestigious universities around the globe in the same year. The LAINAC was one of the projects that was selected as a part of this plan, and with the provided official support, this project aims to broaden networks with diverse academic institutions in Spain and Latin American countries, beginning with El Colegio de México.

UTokyo LAINAC has so far organized a variety of collaborative research initiatives and student programs with Latin American and Spanish universities. In 2018, UTokyo LAINAC was officially integrated into the Institute for Advanced Global Studies as one of its principal research centers.
