Title: “Poverty, Informality and Clientelistic Policies”
Summary:
Since the late 20th century, Mexico has been hailed by many economists and political scientists as a “model student of reform.” Nonetheless, significant inequalities persist, and the divide between formality (formal sector) and informality (informal sector) has been frequently cited as one of the main causes. Since 2018, the administrations of MORENA (Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional), led first by López Obrador and now by Sheinbaum, have adopted political styles that differ markedly from previous governments. While often criticized as examples of “leftist populism” and ”return to informal and personalized politics” or even as the “PRI of the 21st century,” both have maintained high approval ratings.
In this seminar, we welcome Dr. Guillermo Cejudo — a distinguished political scientist and public administration expert who has closely observed the transformation of Mexico’s social policies in recent years— to discuss the relationship between poverty, social policy, and the political system. A substantial amount of time will be allocated for Q&A, and we encourage the participation of researchers from diverse fields and disciplines.
