Liberalism As a Way of Life / 生き方としてのリベラリズム (GSI International Seminar)

このたび、世界的に反響を呼んでいるLiberalism as a Way of Life (Princeton University Press, 2024）の著者アレクサンドル・ルフェーブル氏を招き、講演セミナーを開催いたします。ふるってご参加いただければ幸いです。

今回の講演では、本書の内容について著者本人から解説いただき、その後参加者との質疑応答を行います。なお、同書を未読の方も対象ですので目を通していただいている必要はありません。

要旨：Liberalism is typically understood as a legal and political doctrine. When we talk about liberalism, it seems that we’re talking about constitutions, rights, and policy. In this presentation, I argue that in Western liberal democracies liberalism has transformed into a cultural and even spiritual doctrine as well. Today, liberal societies are saturated by liberal values and not only in the public domain. Values such as personal freedom, fairness, reciprocity, tolerance, and irony have percolated down to the background culture, such that many people living in liberal democracies are what I call liberal “all the way down.” Whether at family gatherings, hanging out with friends, at work, or even on a date, they are liberal through and through. Drawing on my recent book, Liberalism as a Way of Life (Princeton 2024), I will present the two faces of liberalism—legal and spiritual—to show how it has evolved into a comprehensive way of life for so many people in Western democracies. The book has been named a Best Book of 2024 by The New Yorker and The Australian Book Review.
