要旨/ Abstract:
Editors are often relegated to the margins of film production discourse—considered invisible labor or a subset of film direction that are neglected in archives and ethnographies of production cultures. In this talk, I reposition them as central agents in shaping how disability is represented in contemporary Bollywood. Drawing on 15 semi-structured interviews with editors, I explore how editing practices actively construct what I term “disability affect”: a sensory, affective, and narrative form that emerges from the interplay of editorial decisions and negotiations over the commercial imperatives of mainstream cinema in an editing room. From the use of close-ups and jump cuts to the manipulation of rhythm, aurality, and scene transitions, editors deploy a rich toolkit to frame disability not merely as representation, but as genre and spectacle. This presentation foregrounds how editorial labor transforms raw footage into compelling narratives that both reflect and reshape cultural understandings of disability, ultimately positioning it as a marketable and affective format within Bollywood’s evolving content strategies.
